Special Needs Hockey in Rhode Island

Do you know someone with cognitive and/or developmental disabilities who would like the chance to learn to skate or play ice hockey in an environment which is adapted to their level of ability?

The GPYHA Special Hockey Program offers Learn-to-Skate/Instructional Hockey for children ages 4 to young adult, with Down Syndrome, Autism Spectrum Disorder, or behavioral/emotional special needs. Ice sessions are held Saturday mornings at Lynch Arena in Pawtucket, RI, from October to March. No previous skating experience is required, and enrollment is open throughout the season.

Special Hockey emphasizes players to have fun through teamwork, social interaction, and improving the quality of life while learning to skate and play hockey. Our experienced staff of certified special-needs professionals, USA Hockey certified coaches, and junior coaches offers a very high player-to-coach ratio providing each skater with optimum support and encouragement.

The minimum equipment required for the program will be skates (single blade) and a hockey helmet with face mask. We have historically found that players with elbow pads, knee pads, hockey pants tend to get up smiling when they fall – a great motivator for new skaters!

Stop in to see the program this week or reach out to us for more information at rispecialhockey@aol.com. RI Special Hockey is a member of USA Hockey.

Registration is now open for the 2022-23 Season.
